Moyamoya disease is a rare chronic occlusive cerebrovascular disease, the etiology of which is still unknown. The disease is characterized by progressive occlusion of the ends of bilateral internal carotid arteries (ICA) with the formation of an abnormal vascular network at the skull base, which is called "moyamoya disease" because this abnormal vascular network at the skull base resembles "smoke" on cerebral angiography. The incidence of moyamoya disease is high in East Asian countries, and there is certain family clustering, and genetic factors may be involved in the onset. In recent years, the incidence and prevalence of moyamoya disease in China have gradually increased, but there are still many controversies in the diagnosis and treatment. In 2017, experts from more than 20 clinical medical centers across the country jointly formulated the Chinese expert consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of moyamoya disease and moyamoya syndrome[1]。 This expert consensus combines the new progress in the diagnosis and treatment of moyamoya disease in recent years, and adds and updates the content of the previous version of the consensus.
