Misshaped cells of small intestine epithelia were observed in dogs succumbed to whole body exposure of 720~10100 rad mixed gamma and neutron irradiation. They were observed between the 2nd and the 7th day after irradiation, but mostly on the 3rd and the 4th.
Misshaped cells occurred at first in the crypt of small intestine, then migrated upward along villi and covered the exposed mucosa after three days. As soon as the intestinal glands began to regenerate, the misshaped cells gradually disappeared.
The morphologic characteristics of misshaped cells involved enlarged size and different shapes; pathologic changes in ultrastructure together with abnormal histochemical reaction (DNA, RNA, PAS) were apparent.
According to the morphological characteristics of misshaped cells, i. e. , the site of their existence, the presence of microvilli, occasional appearance of goblet cells etc. , we regard them still belonging to epithelial cells of small intestine. The abnormal shape of cells probably results from the pathologic and compensative reaction of the injured intestinal stem cells which resume their vital activity within a short period after supralcthal irradiation.
